Chief Justice Roberts Refers Kavanaugh Ethics Complaints To 10th Circuit

Howard TerryOct 14, 2018

Taking the podium as the Supreme Court's newest justice, Kavanaugh acknowledged the partisan rancor that surrounded his confirmation and gripped the nation over the past two months. Kavanaugh was confirmed as a Supreme Court justice on October 6.

But the Kavanaugh battle has also fired up Democrats who believed the testimony of California professor Christine Blasey Ford and who wanted a more thorough investigation of the sexual misconduct allegations. To 39 percent of the public, Kavanaugh's presence will make no difference in the degree of partisanship. The more seats Democrats hold in 2018, for example, the easier it could be for them to win back the Senate in the 2020 presidential election.

At a White House ceremony on Monday night, Kavanaugh said he was starting his new job with "no bitterness", seeking to be "a force for stability and unity".

The practical implication for MS is that Senators Wicker and Hyde-Smith will also be home two weeks earlier than planned to campaign.

With Kavanaugh on the bench, the court has five conservatives and four liberals.

And other Democrats warned the intensity of the protests will spill over into the November elections.

At least two other women accused the judge of sexual misconduct when he was in high school and college.

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh participates in his ceremonial public swearing-in with retired Justice Anthony Kennedy as U.S. President Donald Trump and Kavanaugh's wife, Ashley, and daughters Liza and Margaret look on in the East Room.

Speaking before well-wishers, Kavanaugh said that while the confirmation process "tested" him, his "approach" remains the same. Consequently, the Democratic base that sees Trump and Republicans as the enemies of feminism, got even more energized, but so did those who support Trump.

The US academic highlighted that "what was missing in this increased atmosphere of political partisanship and accusations is the simple fact that most Americans focus on other matters".

Led by discontent among women, Americans by a 51-41 percent margin disapprove of Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court -- and a majority favors further investigation by Congress that could lead to efforts to remove him from office.

After polls had tightened last month, Texas Republican Ted Cruz now has an 8-point and 9-point lead over Democrat Beto O'Rourke in recent polls by NYT/Siena and Quinnipiac, respectively.

Kavanaugh was "caught up in a hoax that was set up by the Democrats", Trump said as he left the White House earlier in the day for a trip to Florida.

Republican senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, a vocal supporter of Mr Kavanaugh during his protracted confirmation, says they have their opponents to thank. Women as a whole support an investigation 58 percent to 37 percent, while men are almost evenly split on that matter, with 47 percent supporting an investigation and 49 percent opposing it.

Partisans appear more dug-in after the Kavanaugh debate, with 65 percent of Republicans saying it motivates them more to support the GOP and 66 percent of Democrats saying they are more motivated to back their own party.

Real Clear Politics now places Democrats with a 6.9-point advantage over Republicans on the generic ballot. Heitkamp said she was concerned about Kavanaugh's temperament after his emotional performance before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
