Dazzling Djokovic dismantles Zverev to earn ranking rise

As the Shanghai Masters continues, Saturday morning sees the semi-finals take place and back with his thoughts on the action is Dan Weston.

"I felt like I got some great rhythm, whereas in Cincinnati I came out of the tournament, I was, like, "I don't know where my game is".

Djokovic is targeting his 72nd career title here on Sunday.

Defeat for Federer means he can't defend the title he won previous year and he will also drop to No 3 in the world rankings after Novak Djokovic supplanted him by reaching the final.

He's is on a 17-match winning streak and is 26-1 in matches played since the start of Wimbledon.

From the beginning of their match, Federer's shot-making was below-par as he missed often on straightforward points or after long rallies, in which Coric was superb.

The first set went with serve, and some big serves at that until Djokovic grabbed the break to go 4-2 up.

"It was the same length, actually, as all three of my matches went the same length basically, an hour and 52 (minutes)", Federer said.

A miss-hit Federer forehand gifted Coric the opening break of the second set for a 2-0 lead, before Coric pulled off an excellent lob and smashed an ace down the tee to move clear at 5-3.

Coric, who is 2-2 against Federer, also beat the 20-time grand slam champion in their last outing at Halle in June.

Coric earned passage to the final by taking down the top-seeded Federer 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals on Saturday. "He is a quick leaner and an intelligent human being and I think the composure he is now showing [is proof] that he is ready to take his tennis to another level".

A win on Sunday would deliver a fourth title for the season to Djokovic, beside Wimbledon and the US Open.

"He had more punch on the ball".

Djokovic will be up to second in the world when the new rankings are released on Monday, but he is desperate to take injured Rafael Nadal's number one spot before the year is out.

"I did what, 24 unforced errors and seven winners?"

"He (Zverev) has improved a lot, and he has established himself as a top player", Djokovic said.

Federer was forced to battle into the semi-finals after two tough three-setters against Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista Agut then a hard-fought win over Kei Nishikori.

"And where I was about four months ago and where I am today is quite an extreme opposite".
