Hurricane Michael's death count rises after Virginia reports several fatalities

Howard TerryOct 14, 2018

There's no water, no power and emergency officials have no access to many towns from the Florida Panhandle to Virginia.

The uncertainty perhaps related to how the hurricane interacted (or not) to the upper westerlies, which now look to engage and push the storm northeast.

One of the hardest-hit spots was Mexico Beach where entire blocks of homes near the beach were washed away, leaving nothing but concrete slabs in the sand.

Trees were stripped to stalks, roofs were shredded, trucks toppled and boats pushed into buildings.

Hundreds of cars had broken windows and twisted street signs lay on the ground.

Almost 850,000 homes and businesses were without power in Florida, Alabama, the Carolinas and Georgia on Thursday. A year ago the school welcomed students and families displaced by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

The injured in Florida were taken to hospitals in Tallahassee, with some hurt after the storm by breaking tree limbs and falls, said Allison Castillo, director of emergency services at the city's Capital Regional Medical Center.

CNN journalist Brooke Baldwin was left aghast at what little was left of Mexico Beach, Florida, as she viewed from a helicopter the devastation of the Florida Panhandle from Hurricane Michael, the third-most powerful hurricane to hit the USA mainland in recorded history.

11-year-old Sarah Radney, identified by a coroner Thursday, was killed when a portable carport fell on her home in Seminole County, which is in the extreme southwest corner of Georgia.

- Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency in Virginia on Thursday ahead of Tropical Storm Michael's arrival to the region.

It said Leslie would produce rainfalls of 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 inches) and at some locations as high as 125 mm (5 inches), which would cause flash flooding.
