Israel halts fuel deliveries into Gaza amid deadly clashes with Palestinian protesters

Howard TerryOct 14, 2018

On Friday, Israeli forces said they had arrested a Palestinian on suspicion of stabbing and wounding an army reservist on guard duty at a checkpoint south of Nablus the previous day.

Israeli forces have killed seven Palestinians during protests in the eastern Gaza Strip near the military fence separating the blockaded Palestinian territory from Israel, Gaza's health ministry said.

At least 205 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza since protests began on March 30.

It said four died along the frontier east of Al-Bureij in central Gaza, two east of Gaza City and one near Rafah in southern Gaza.

Palestinian official news agency Wafa identified the passenger who died as 48-year-old mother of eight, Aisha Mohammed Rabi.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, of the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, said 20 terrorists entered Israel through a hole in the border fence created by an improvised explosive device.

Israeli police said on Saturday they were investigating the death of a Palestinian woman in the occupied West Bank, after her husband said he suspected Israeli settlers had pelted their vehicle with rocks.

A total of 252 people were injured - 154 of them by live fire, the ministry said.

In response to the violence, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman decided Friday evening to cut off the flow of fuel into Gaza in light of Friday's violence.

The terms of the deal saw Doha, a longtime Hamas backer, pledge to pay $60 million (52 million euros) for fuel to be brought into Gaza over six months to supply the strip's sole power plant. One Israeli soldier was killed.

Israel accuses Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement that controls Gaza, of orchestrating the protests to provide cover for attacks.

It said that several Gazans later embarked on the border and approached an IDF sniper's post before being shot dead.

However, thousands again gathered Friday in sites along the border, AFP correspondents said.

They also seek the right to return to lands that Palestinians fled or were driven from upon Israel's founding in 1948.
