No significant impact on Galway so far after Storm Callum makes landfall

Irene MckinneyOct 14, 2018

Trains between Swansea and Carmarthen stopped running at 19:00 on Friday evening due to anticipated coastal flooding.

The highest speeds were recorded on the Isles of Scilly in the early hours of Friday morning, while 60mph gales were recorded in Camborne in Cornwall and Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire.

The Britannia Bridge between Anglesey and the mainland was closed to all vehicles, and the A465 Heads of the Valleys road was also closed at Hirwaun in Rhondda Cynon Taff due to flooding.

Passengers are advised to check service updates with ferry companies before travelling from either Holyhead or Fishguard.

A third person has died in what has been dubbed "the worse flooding for 30 years" by locals in Cwmduad in Carmarthenshire, who were left without power after rivers burst their banks.

'However the north and west will still be quite windy, with gusts of 45-50mph expected, bringing in further spells of heavy rain'. Winds mostly moderate southeasterly tonight but remain fresh to strong in some coastal areas.

"South Wales in particular is a cause for concern, with an amber warning in force", Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern warned. That in itself is likely to bring disruption to roads and there is likely to be some bridge closures and power outages.

The yellow weather warning is in place until 11.45pm on Saturday.

A yellow warning covers much of the rest of Wales, as well as parts of Scotland and the North West and South East of England.

The forecaster says Friday will see Storm Callum causing further severe and locally damaging wind gusts to parts of the northwest today but winds will gradually moderate elsewhere. The South East is expected to be blustery but stay "quite dry", with temperatures possibly reaching up to 24C (75F).

The region has been battered by wind and rain.
