The US Justice Department indicated that Bulger had been found at roughly 8:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday and that prison staffers had attempted to resuscitate him.

- Boston mobster Whitey Bulger was killed after arriving at a prison in West Virginia on Tuesday.

The 89-year-old Irish-American gangster was only transferred one day earlier to the high-security prison in Hazelton, West Virginia, where officials initially reported an inmate was slain overnight.

Federal Bureau of Prisons officials and his attorney had declined to comment on why he was being moved.

Last week, he was transferred out of a federal prison in Florida to the one in Oklahoma City.

Bulger was convicted of killing at least 11 people and his life story was told in the Johnny Depp movie Black Mass.

Bulger spent 16 years on the FBI's Most Wanted list after going on the lam, fleeing his hometown as the feds closed in.

Bulger was serving a life sentence for 11 murders and dozens of other crimes.

"Life-saving measures were initiated immediately by responding staff", the spokesperson said.

In February 2015, Bulger made headline news after he penned a letter to three teenagers who reached out to him for a school project. A character in the 2006 Martin Scorsese film "The Departed" was based on Bulger.

"Bulger embarked upon a life of crime at the age of 14 and had become a prominent figure in Boston's organized crime scene by the late 1970s".

Bulger would pen notes on his lawyer's legal pad at his cell in MA back in 2014 and have them delivered via his lawyer to Greig who was detained at a Rhode Island Jail at the time. It's unclear if authorities have determined who played a role in the murder.

"I heard he wasn't feeling well a while back", Jackie Bulger said of Whitey.

His girlfriend, Catherine Greig, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison in 2012 for identity fraud and helping the mob boss avoid capture.

She is now behind bars at a federal women's prison in Minnesota serving an eight-year sentence.
