The Ellen MacArthur Foundation today (29 October) launched its New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, backed by companies that produce 20% of all plastic packaging worldwide, as well as governments, NGOs, universities, industry associations, investors and other organisations. The Global Commitment and its vision for a circular economy for plastic is led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with UN Environment.

Produced in collaboration with the UN Environment, the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment has drawn signatories from numerous world's largest packaging producers, brands, retailers and recyclers, governments and NGOs.

Over the past four years, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation has been rallying businesses and governments behind the positive vision of a circular economy for plastics.

"We're heading in the right direction, but we need to look at the whole plastic system in New Zealand and join other countries in adopting a true sustainable economy approach", Eugenie Sage said.

UPM Raflatac has signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, a new initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to work towards a circular economy for plastics.

Brand signatories include well-known businesses such as Danone, H&M group, L'Oréal, Mars Inc., PepsiCo, The Coca-Cola Company, and Unilever. The targets will be reviewed every 18 months to ensure they are being met. We have reached a point where even the air we breathe can contain plastic, and if we fail to act, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.

100% of plastic packaging to be reusable or recyclable by 2023. Five venture capital funds have also pledged more than $200 million to support the initiative.

Eliminating problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and moving from single-use to reusable packaging models. Netherlands- based non-government engineering environmental organization, named Ocean Cleanup is starting its efforts to extract plastic waste out of the sea. But plastic should never become a waste product, it should retain its economic value.

The scheme was set up by the charity founded by British yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur. We see it as critical that ecostore is part of the concerted response to address today's plastics challenge.

It is by coming together and using the combined power and expertise of everyone involved that we can make plastic pollution a thing of the past.

Alexandre Ricard, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Pernod Ricard added that "for us, the problem surrounding plastics isn't a new one but it feels that we have now reached a tipping point".
