Trump, First Lady Receive Cheers From Hospital Workers in Pittsburgh

Bernstein, who lives near Tree of Life and was at another house of worship during Saturday's massacre, went with two friends in part to urge people to vote.

The president and first lady Melania Trump's first stop was to the Tree of Life synagogue where they took part in lighting one Yahrzeit candle for each of the shooting victims.

Synagogue shooting victim Joyce Fienberg may have been cut down by hate, but her "beautiful soul" will live on in the hearts of friends and family, mourners said during a somber funeral Wednesday.

A total of 11 people died after a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue during a baby naming ceremony on Saturday.

The attack - which the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has described as the deadliest targeting Jews in U.S. history - has heightened a national debate over Trump's rhetoric, which critics say has contributed to a surge in white nationalist and neo-Nazi activity. They cited Trump's comments immediately after the shooting that the Tree of Life should have had an armed guard.

Dan Frankel, a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, called Younger outgoing and opinionated.

"He was very interested in social justice and he probably would not have wanted the death penalty [for the gunman]", Mr Frankel said.

Bowers appeared in court Monday in a wheelchair, where he said nothing other than "Yes" and "Yes, sir" to a judge in response to procedural questions. He had faced 29 counts.

Included are 11 counts each of obstruction of the free exercise of religious belief resulting in death and use of a firearm to commit murder during a crime of violence, a conviction on any of which could be punishable by death, according to the indictment.

President Trump is visiting Pittsburgh in the aftermath of the October 27 shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill; approximately 1,000 people reportedly protested his visit because of his rhetoric.

"President Trump, you are not welcome in Pittsburgh until you fully renounce white nationalism", she read.

The New York Times reported that Kushner and Ivanka encouraged Trump to visit Pittsburgh in light of the attack.

Since then, the US President's rhetoric has been accused by many of "encouraging antisemitsm". Trump did not speak publicly during the almost four-hour visit to Pittsburgh.

After the visit, Trump tweeted: "Small protest was not seen by us, staged far away".

President Trump, meanwhile, arrived in Pittsburgh to pay his respects and encountered hundreds of shouting, chanting protesters with signs such as "It's your fault" and "Words matter", a reference to allegations his bellicose language has emboldened bigots.

With Tree of Life still cordoned off as a crime scene, more than 1,000 people poured into Rodef Shalom, one of the city's oldest and largest synagogues, to mourn the Rosenthal brothers, ages 59 and 54. The Democratic governor of Pennsylvania and the Democratic mayor of Pittsburgh didn't want him to visit while people were mourning the deaths.

Suspect Robert Bowers is facing more than two dozen charges related to the bloodshed at the Tree of Life, which is located in the city's traditionally Jewish Squirrel Hill neighbourhood.

Four days after the attack, nerves in Squirrel Hill were still frayed. The report was later found to be false.

Funerals were planned Thursday for Bernice and Sylvan Simon, husband and wife, and Dr. Richard Gottfried, a dentist who worked part-time at a clinic treating refugees and immigrants.

Another mourner, a retired teacher who only gave her first name Nancy, said: "I was finally able to cry".
