Man City on top, Chelsea move second

Raheem Sterling scored twice and Sergio Aguero became the ninth player to reach 150 English Premier League goals as Manchester City powered back to the top of the standings by crushing Southampton 6-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Monday (NZT).

Danny Ings' first half penalty did at least halt a run of five consecutive top flight games without a goal for Saints, but it was scant consolation as City romped to victory.

"The first season, when the ball arrived in the box he was scared, he was looking, who is the guy I am going to pass the ball?" "He is becoming a winning player and he is just 23 years old".

But Guardiola said it was too early to claim that Sterling is one of the best players in the world as he still needs to increase his consistency.

"He is in incredible form, he is sharp, fast, clever, fighting, decisive, he can play both sides and can play in the middle and receive the ball between the lines and commit the centre-backs with a lot of aggressiveness".

Southampton did pull a goal back through a Danny Ings penalty - the first City have conceded in the league since September 1 - but Raheem Sterling put any suggestion of a comeback to bed with a fourth in first-half stoppage time. "We can not forget that".

"Of course", Guardiola said when asked if this was how he wants to see Aguero play.

He has scored six times in nine games in 2018-19, having scored 10 in his first season under Guardiola (2016-17).

Southampton are in 16th place, two places above the relegation zone with a solitary win this campaign and manager Hughes was left to rue the disastrous start to the game.

"Thank you so much to make me feel at home in your country here and in Manchester".

"It is hard when you are down", Hughes added.

"You need to be more aggressive than we were able to show".

"Our shots on target are right up there in comparison to how clinical Man City were and how we were with our chances and that's been the story from the beginning of the season - we get good moments but at times we pick the wrong option or don't take clear cut chances that we create".
