Whitsundays shark attack victim identified as medical researcher Daniel Christidis

Whitsunday is the largest island in the Whitsunday Islands group, a major worldwide tourist attraction popular with scuba divers and sailors where shark attacks have been rare.

The Whitsunday Islands region around Cid Harbour is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Australia, with more than 750,000 local and global visitors a year.

The victim was taking turns with a woman on a paddle board in the harbour on Monday afternoon.

They anchored 23 kilometers from Airlie Beach in Cid Harbor, intending to spend their first night in the protected mooring location on Whitsunday Island, the largest uninhabited island of the group, O'Connell reported.

There were more than a dozen yachts in the harbour at the time.

"CPR was ongoing for a very long time and every solid effort was made to save that man's life", O'Connell said, referring cardiopulmonary resuscitation. "They did everything imaginable to try to save the man".

He suffered severe injuries to his left thigh, right calf and left wrist, and the group gave first aid to him after he was pulled from the water onto the 40-foot chartered vessel.

"It was one of the more hard ones for everyone involved".

A schoolgirl from Melbourne, Hannah Papps, subsequently lost her leg in the attack.

On September 20, a 12-year-old girl was left in a serious condition after a shark bit her on the leg.

Marine biologist Blake Chapman says it's hard to say what has changed and whether the three attacks indicate an increase in shark activity - but he believes more research should be conducted to find out.

He said: "We need to now have the scientific background and investigation of what is causing this sudden spike of attacks and interactions with sharks. We are reaching out to his colleagues and will provide counseling support to anyone who needs it", the rep said.

Those attacks in one of Australia's most well-known tourist areas led authorities to set out baited lines to capture and kill several sharks.

Critics took to social media to protest that killing sharks was not the answer and that the predator plays an important role in the ecosystem and the survival of the endangered reef.

Numerous charter boat operators were sensitive enough about the attacks to refuse the ABC's attempts yesterday to charter a boat out to Cid Harbour, amid concern about adverse media attention on the region.

Gschwind called for a science-based response to the latest tragedy.

Excluding Monday's incident, unprovoked shark attacks have killed one person and injured 16 others in Australia this year, according to the Australian Shark Attack File.
