Cardinals Emerge as Candidate in Bryce Harper Sweepstakes

But if they do, it nearly certainly won't be that deal, and Washington's general manager and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo acknowledged on Tuesday that his team can not afford to wait around for the right-fielder to make his decision.

The biggest name taking part in this year's edition of Major League Baseball free agency is easily Bryce Harper.

First, the Nationals - often described as somewhere between maddeningly selective in their spending and unnecessarily frugal - were willing to give one of their players a record-setting deal. Looks like they want to get the bad taste of Dexter Fowler's deal out of their mouth and throw some more money to big-name free agents!

Harper, 26, turned down a 10-year, $300 million offer from the Washington Nationals on September 26.

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors predicted last week that Harper would sign a 14-year/$420 million contract.

So what is Harper going to be looking for? Zack Greinke ($34 million), David Price ($31 million) and Clayton Kershaw ($31 million) all got more. "I think we have a good strategy in place, a good plan in place, and we have started to begin that process and we will see where it takes us".

While Harper rejected the Nationals' initial offer, he can still choose to re-sign with the team. Recent reports suggest that the Yankees, Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants might not be interested, and that Harper himself might not be interested in the St. Louis Cardinals.

"We know who the team is, it's already completed and done", Boras said.

But it appears Harper to do the same with multiple suitors in the bidding.

As we settle in for the beginning of Harper's Bazaar - which, in case you were wondering, is "fashionable", "elite", "historical" and "has inspirations that deal with great shoes and great hair", according to Boras - here's the latest chatter on his market...
