Democrat-run House may put Trump, Kushner business ties overseas under microscope

The election also signalled a check on the powers of president Trump.

He named checked several GOP candidates who lost Tuesday.

"Mia gave me no love", he said of Love.

"He is really angry at Ryan", one source said on "everything". The GOP did add to its majority in the Senate. "The message they were trying to send us is you've got to beat Trump in the battleground states, and you've got to run on very mainstream, nonextreme Democratic ideals and values".

President Donald Trump is calling out Republican candidates who apparently did not support him enough and lost congressional seats in Tuesday's elections.

Pelosi appears to have the support of many current members of the House, but dozens of newcomers - many of them elected on a more progressive agenda - have not committed to her, and some have said they'll actively oppose her.

Internal Revenue Service law allows House and Senate tax-writing committees to request federal returns, and the ranking Ways and Means Democrat, Rep. Richard Neal of MA, has signalled publicly he would ask for them - a move the White House might fight. And it seems highly unlikely any Republican will vote for the woman their party has demonized in thousands of campaign ads.

In theory, the new Democratic majority would have the capacity to initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump should there be sufficient grounds in Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation.

But in Georgia, Democrat Stacey Abrams - who was hoping to become the first black female governor in the United States - refused to concede as her Republican opponent Brian Kemp took a commanding lead after a bitter campaign.

Trump said he wasn't sure whether he should be happy or sad about their defeats.

Following the press conference, he announced in a tweet he had fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He reiterated that he was reviewing Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke job as well, following numerous reports of ethical violations. The president may say he wants "unity and peace and love" - but it's clear it will have to be on his terms.

In Texas, Sen Ted Cruz staved off a tough challenge from Democrat Beto O'Rourke, whose record-smashing fundraising and celebrity have set off buzz he could be a credible 2020 White House contender. "It's a very bad thing that you said".

Trump has frequently been combative with reporters, and painted the news media as "enemies of the people", but Wednesdays press conference raised the level of his hostility.

When Acosta continued to push Trump with questions about the federal investigation into Russia's involvement in the Trump campaign, the president called the reporter a "rude, awful person" and, later, identified him as "the enemy of the people".

In another heated exchange, PBS News Hour's Yamiche Alcindor asked Trump whether he thought his use of the term "nationalist" emboldened "white nationalists". If Pelosi moves forward with her bid for speaker, those 20 members will have to ask themselves whether they want to make her vulnerable to a challenge on the House floor, leaving Democrats squabbling just when they've gotten the majority back after almost a decade in the wilderness.

He called himself "a great moral leader", and in answer to another question said he has never used racist remarks. And the Democrats could see a struggle inside the party over how aggressively to confront the Trump administration. "I want to probe senior administration officials across the government who have abused their positions of power and wasted taxpayer money, as well as President Trump's decisions to act in his own financial self-interest".

Now with Democrats in control of the House, if Trump's companies or other interests ignore their subpoenas or try legal manoeuvrs to delay or spurn them, they could face a contempt citation to the House floor.

Emanuel, who as a member of Congress oversaw his party's takeover of the House in 2006, said he has no doubt that what took place yesterday in House races was a rejection of the President, especially given the strength of the economy and the degree to which congressional district lines favour the Republicans. I could not be prouder of the organization we built together.
