Let's get high: MI just voted to legalize recreational marijuana

Eileen GuzmanNov 08, 2018

Ten months after Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded marijuana policies imposed during former President Barack Obama's administration, the results of Tuesday's midterm elections could reveal if Americans are wary of defying federal pot prohibition amid uncertainties caused by the Justice Department's about-face.

Voters this evening passed Proposal 18-1 into law, making MI the 10th state to legalize marijuana.

Voters have spoken and the proposition to legalize recreational marijuana in MI has been approved. But the Michigan Legislature still has to write laws that will govern the state's licensing system for marijuana businesses, and then the businesses will have to get proper licensing.

In the US, cannabis remains illegal under federal law.

Burleson pointed out that MedMen's acquisition of PharmaCann will give it early exposure in MI, as the Midwest market develops. The most straightforward approach I've seen is the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act, a one-sentence bill sponsored by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) that makes the federal marijuana ban inapplicable to anyone acting in compliance with state law. The compromise is more restrictive than other states' medical marijuana efforts, since patients won't be allowed to grow their own weed and can only smoke the prescribed bud under certain circumstances.

Because voters chose not to add any restrictions, the state law will remain as it now stands, allowing the city to have up to eight retail marijuana stores. "Two-thirds of the country wants marijuana to be legal, and politicians are ignoring that at their peril".

Missouri voters opted to approve the sale of medical marijuana with a 4 per cent tax on cannabis sales with the revenue dedicated to health care services for us veterans.

Here's a look at five states that had cannabis reform on their ballots and how those proposals fared with voters.

Kristin Schrader, 51, a Democrat from Superior Township in Washtenaw County, said she voted to legalize marijuana because she doesn't want people leaving MI to get it.

Voters in three states approved the expansion of marijuana use on Tuesday.

These votes could also have a substantial impact on criminal justice in the states creating legal marijuana markets. It would have also expunged past and current convictions related to cannabis.
