Manchester City rocked by latest allegations of financial doping

Grant SmithNov 08, 2018

"UEFA should do its job in terms of enforcing FFP because, as we have said before, both Manchester City and PSG are not complying with FFP rules".

The magazine reported that Man City officials detailed a long-term search for "creative solutions" to hiding expenses and evading UEFA monitoring of spending on players. The statement said the club would not comment on "the attempt to damage the club's reputation", but Guardiola fielded questions about the allegations at a news conference ahead of their Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday. "We want to follow the rules, but I'm a manager, I don't know what happened", he added.

Some of City's sponsorship deals came under renewed scrutiny in Wednesday's instalment from Der Spiegel, which claimed that City remain sensitive to allegations of human rights abuse in the United Arab Emirates. And we want to do what we have to do in terms of the rules.

The leaked documents appear to show that tens of millions of pounds that were supposed to have come from City's sponsors Etihad Airways was paid directly to the club by the owners. "After we have three or four days to think about United".

It led to apparent threats of legal action from the club and indignation to the point where City fans still gleefully greet the UEFA anthem with a chorus of boos on Champions League nights. Arabtec workers had gone on strike in May 2013, which was said to have resulted "in violence and deportations" and there had also been reports about the dire conditions in Abu Dhabi for migrant workers.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has ripped into Manchester City for breaching the FFP regulations laid down by the UEFA.

Vicky Kloss, the City director of communications, was said to have sent an email to club executives warning them to avoid a deal. The sale of marketing rights in this particular instances is said to have brought in €30m, boosting revenues to further help FFP compliance.

"We will need to fight this", Soriano wrote, according to the magazine, "and do it in a way that is not visible, or we will be pointed out as the global enemies of football".

City CEO Ferran Soriano complained in one memo that ECA members were pushing for the UEFA rules - which many thought could curb the rise of Man City and Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain. Usually clubs pay players for their image rights.

PSG have already launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against UEFA's re-opened financial fair play investigation.

Der Spiegel said this helped turn nearly 30 million euros ($34 million) into revenue instead of a cost, for the objective of UEFA's investigation of club accounts.
