Pentagon: Most troops despatched to frame won’t be armed

Meanwhile, a risk assessment by the Defense Department "found that the caravan did not pose a threat to the United States" and that "the caravan would take about a month and a half to get to the USA border", CNBC reported.

Far from stopping a tide of tired refugees with cruel live fire, U.S. troops sent to the southern border aren't even supposed to come into physical with caravan migrants, says Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford. "Barbed wire used properly can be a lovely sight".

Trump has been very vocal about the caravan, calling it an "invasion" and saying it will be met by the military. But they do that with us, they're going to be arrested for a long time.

Pentagon spokesman Bill Speaks, meanwhile, said that the military "have not received a request from DHS to build facilities to house migrant families".

The President confirmed last week that his administration was prepared to send upwards of 15,000 U.S. troops to the region to help prevent the "migrant caravan" from entering the United States illegally.

"The rest of the day in the southwest border region would be deployed 5.2 thousand soldiers". There are reports that this deployment could cost upwards of $200 million.

Manning said only military police would carry weapons and stressed that there were no plans for USA troops to come in contact with protesters or migrants.

He warned that the group of caravans was "vicious" - young men were throwing rocks at the Mexican police officers as they forced their way.

Around 900 troops have arrived at the US-Mexico border since the Trump administration announced the deployment on October 26. But, the official noted, that was not expected to be part of Faithful Patriot and the timing of any such future mission was unclear.

Meanwhile, a big group of Central Americans has agreed to push towards Mexico City from a coastal state on Monday, planning to exit a part of the country that has always been treacherous for migrants seeking to get to the United States.

Trump's push to send the military to the border comes ahead of Tuesday's mid-term congressional elections and has triggered sharp reactions, with critics calling it a political stunt that misuses us military resources. Mr. Trump has blasted illegal immigration in the past, and called for the importance of border security.
