Pentagon: Russian Jet Makes ‘Unsafe’ Intercept of US Plane

Howard TerryNov 08, 2018

A November 5 statement accompanying the video called the Russian SU-27 plane's interaction with the U.S. EP-3 Aries electronic warfare and reconnaissance aircraft "irresponsible" and "unsafe" due to "a highspeed pass directly in front of the [U.S.] aircraft".

Whether the USA military labels an air encounter is unsafe or unprofessional has less to do with the distances between aircraft and more with the behavior of the pilots intercepting the aircraft.

The Navy EP-3 was based in Souda Bay, Greece. The incident reportedly lasted 25 minutes. Washington stated that the SU-27 made a flight in which it broke the sound barrier near the ER-3 and, in its opinion, put at risk the lives of the pilots of the USA aircraft.

In a statement, the U.S. Navy said their plane had to apply its afterburner after the first pass and faced turbulence and vibrations. - We hope that [henceforth] they will behave in accordance with global standards to ensure safety and prevent incidents, including the 1972 Agreement on the prevention of incidents at sea and airspace above it (INCSEA). It posted video, on Twitter, showing an armed Russian fighter jet flying within meters of the spy plane.

The US Navy pilots said the Russian jet came within five feet (1.5 metres) of their aircraft, according to defence department officials.

In turn, Russian Federation has denied the statement of the us authorities that the maneuver was carried out "unsafe".

The Ministry called the Russian military action irresponsible, demanding to behave in accordance with global standards to ensure safety and prevent risky incidents.

The Russian Defense ministry acknowledged the incident, insisting, however, that the Su-27 kept a safe distance from the EP-3.

The Russian jet approached and identified the aircraft as a U.S.

"The jet's crew reported identifying the US reconnaissance plane and accompanied it, preventing a violation of Russian airspace and followed all necessary safety procedures", the statement from Russian defense officials said, according to Russian state-backed Sputnik News.
