US Supreme Court justice Ginsburg hospitalised after fall

Howard TerryNov 08, 2018

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is hospitalized after taking a nasty fall that fractured 3 ribs, and the fall comes immediately on the heels of President Trump easing his path to confirming more Supreme Court Justices.

Ginsburg's hospitalization comes on the morning of the formal investiture of the court's newest justice, Brett M. Kavanaugh.

Typical recovery time for broken ribs is about six weeks, according to WebMD, so it's possible that Ginsburg could be back on the bench before the year ends.

"Tests showed that she fractured three ribs on her left side and she was admitted for observation and treatment", the statement read. She broke two ribs in 2012, without missing work.

Asked past year if she was contemplating retirement, she said, "As long as I can do the job full steam, I will do it". She was the second woman to ever be confirmed to the Supreme Court, after retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Arberg did not provide additional details about how Ginsburg fell or whether she fell because of another medical condition.

Ginsburg, who was appointed by president Bill Clinton in 1993, is one of four liberal justices on the nine-member court.

There's precedent for her lengthy service, as Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and John Paul Stevens were both 90 when they retired.
