Final Fantasy XV game director Hajime Tabata departs Square Enix

Having invested so much time and so many resources into Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix was planning to keep fans engaged and spending with four more DLC packs. With Tabata taking leave of the company and the Final Fantasy XV project, three of the four planned DLC expansions have been cancelled. "The desire is to deliver this new AAA experience to everyone even a day [sic] sooner, and due to this directional change, the company made a decision to focus our resources on the development of this AAA title". Which itself came on the back of an earlier report that the company had posted an "extraordinary loss" of 3,733 million Yen (roughly $33) for the six-month period ending the 30th September. While most gamers were no doubt expecting nothing but good news, Square Enix revealed that the majority of the game's DLC has been canceled, and director Hajime Tabata has quit.

The new DLCs were being developed by Luminous Productions, game director Tabata's new studio within the company.

Players who already own the Comrades DLC via the Final Fantasy XV season pass will get the standalone version for free. "The main goal of establishing Luminous Productions was to create a studio that can deliver a completely new AAA title to the global market". There's no doubt that Square Enix sunk quite a bit of money into the extra Final Fantasy XV content, which probably had something to do with their financial loss. As of today, Episodes Aranea, Lunafreya, and Noctis have all been scrapped and will not see a release.

It's not clear what this news means for other Final Fantasy related projects, like the remake of Final Fantasy VII, which is one of Square's most long-requested remasterings.

All but one Episode of "The Dawn of the Future", the Final Fantasy XV DLC initially scheduled to release throughout 2019, has been cancelled.

"In regards to my next endeavors and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after "FFXV"," Tabata stated. Tabata officially resigned from Luminous Productions and Square Enix on October 31st.
