Trump calls a question about nationalism 'racist' in post-election news conference

When the president tried to go to another journalist, Acosta declined to give up the microphone and asked about possible indictments by special counsel Robert Mueller based on the ongoing investigation into Trump's presidential campaign.

"They took the C-SPAN video, threw away half the frames and reblended them back together to make it seem full".

"This is a lie", Acosta tweeted back at Sanders.

"Honestly, I think you should let me run the country, you run CNN, and if you did it well your ratings would be much better", Trump said.

Critics said that video - which sped up the movement of Acosta's arms in a way that dramatically changed the journalist's response - was deceptively edited to score political points. Finally, in reaction to Acosta's credentials being yanked, CNN declared that such a decision was a "threat to our democracy".

The New York Times editorialized in favor of restoring Acosta's pass, saying it signaled Trump's view that asking hard questions disqualifies reporters from attending briefings.

"You and I have a difference of opinion", Trump said. A White House intern reaches across Acosta's body and grabs the microphone he is holding. Those were reporters working with CNN, NBC, other networks.

Acosta repeatedly presses Sanders in her rare briefings to clarify quotes and policy from the president.

"Well, when you report fake news - no, when you report fake news, which CNN does a lot - you are the enemy of the people", a fuming Trump said before wandering away from the podium again. Trump became frustrated with Acosta's antics.

She called Acosta's behavior "absolutely unacceptable". CNN stood by him, writing in a statement that Sanders "provided fraudulent accusations and cited an incident that never happened".

"President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his Administration", said Sanders in a statement this evening. Acosta asked, as he pressed Trump on the migrant caravan.

A White House staff member steps in to try to take the microphone away from Acosta.

Since Donald Trump stated Mr Acosta would receive a temporary ban, the reporter has been prevented from entering the White House.

It means the Trump presidency - which already had no free rein despite a Republican-led chamber - will face a significant challenge, setting the tone over the remaining two years.

The White House News Photographers Association's president Whitney Shefte issued a statement expressing outrage that Sanders "may have shared a manipulated video".

"As I told the officer, I don't blame him".
