Bound flight crash lands in Guyana

The Fly Jamaica flight bound for Toronto experienced a technical malfunction mid-air, less than 20 minutes after takeoff early on Friday morning.

That included 82 Canadians, one American, 35 Guyanese, one Pakistani and one Trinidadian.

There were 118 adults and two infants aboard as well as eight crew members made up of six Guyanese and two Jamaicans.

Six passengers suffered nonlife-threatening injuries when the plane landed about 45 minutes after it departed Cheddi Jagan International Airport at about 2 a.m. local time (0600 GMT), hesaid.

The twin-engine jet skidded off the runway, injuring half a dozen people, according to the report.

"To date, we have no reports of any Canadian citizens being injured", said government spokesman Philip Hannan in Ottawa.

Its right wing and engine were badly damaged.

Bowen said two elderly passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution and the plane was safely evacuated.

Fly Jamaica Flight 256 headed back to the Guyanan capital Georgetown because of a technical problem, the airline said in a statement on its website, adding that it believes all 118 passengers and 8 crew members are safe.

On landing at 2:53 AM, the emergency services were activated and since then an investigator from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority has taken responsibility for the crash site.

The Airline has since said it is providing local assistance and "will further release information as soon as it is available".

It is not known exactly what caused the problem with the Fly Jamaica plane, which was a 757-200 model. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the United States has been informed as well.
