Imelda Marcos jailed at least 6 years for graft

Marcos, a member of the Philippines House of Representatives, will be given 30 days to explain her absence, according to Lenina Alisuag, from office of the clerk of courts of the Sandiganbayan Court Fifth Division, which has jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases involving graft and corrupt practices.

According to the decision made earlier today, Imelda will be facing six years and one month in prison and "up to 11 years for each count".

The court barred Marcos from holding public office as part of the sentence.

Imelda Marcos' husband was ousted by an army-backed "people power" revolt in 1986.

Former Philippine Human Rights Commission chair Loretta Ann Rosales, who was raped and tortured by soldiers of the Marcos regime, told ABS-CBN Network that she was "jumping up and down in joy in disbelief" at the guilty verdict.

Imelda was also charged for having "financial interests" in companies while in office from 1968 to 1986.

The case has been pending with the anti-graft court for 27 years. Imelda Marcos is now a congresswoman.

"We presented former Prime Minister Cesar Virata, and according to his testimony eh hindinaman directly ma-pinpoint 'yung participation ni First Lady, so hindi ganun kasama ang loob namin as to the local corporations, (he can not directly pinpoint the participation of the First Lady, so we are not that dissatisfied with the results as to the local corporations)", he said.

Imelda Marcos was the governor of metropolitan Manila during the 1970s when she committed the offenses she was sentenced for on Friday, a scheme that involved shifting about $200 million out of the Philippines and stashing the money in Swiss foundations.

President Rodrigo Duterte enjoys good ties with the Marcos family and has often praised the late strongman.

"Duterte's spokesman, Salvador Panelo, said in a statement the ruling against Imelda Marcos was proof that the executive "is not in the business of exerting undue interference or influence" on courts, and therefore respects the decision".

"While we note that there are still legal remedies available to Congresswoman Marcos, this latest development underscores that our country now has a working and impartial justice system that favors no one", Panelo said in a statement.
