Malibu Under Mandatory Evacuations Due to California Brushfire

Five of the dead were found in cars in the town of Paradise in northern California that was destroyed by the Camp Fire.

"Firefighters continue to actively engage the fire in order to protect life and property", the Chico Fire Department said in a tweet.

"There are times when you have such rapid-moving fires ... no amount of planning is going to result in a flawless scenario, and that's what we had to deal with here", Honea told the Action News Network.

The fire in Paradise was reported shortly after daybreak in a rural area. "And it moved very, very quickly from a rather remote area to populated areas". Additionally, at least 2,000 structures have been destroyed, while 15,000 remain threatened, filling shelters and closing roads across the area.

"We're working very hard to get people out.The message I want to get out is: If you can evacuate, you need to evacuate", Honea said.

Its rapid growth and early-morning arrival means that residents didn't have much time to leave or firefighters time to prepare, leaving them to play a game of catch-up against an extremely active fire.

'Things started exploding, ' said resident Gina Oviedo. Miller at first scoffed at the notion of getting back in a vehicle. Residents abandoned vehicles and ran from the flames carrying children and pets, officials said.

Butte County supervisor Doug Teeter said authorities used a bulldozer to push abandoned cars out the way to reach Feather River Hospital and evacuate patients as flames engulfed its old wing and the roof of the emergency department.

An undetermined number of civilians and firefighters have been injured and Maclean said earlier it could take days to determine the number of fatalities.

Acting Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the northern part of the state to help facilitate rescue and recovery efforts. As of Friday evening, the wind-fueled fire was only 5 percent contained after burning up to 70,000 acres anddestroying 6,453 homes.

The Paradise fire is known as the Camp fire in California, and has now raged across 31 miles (20,000 acres) of the state. At least nine people died in or near their homes or vehicles as they tried to outrace the "Camp Fire" that started on Thursday morning, has devastated the mountain town of Paradise, about 90 miles north of the state capital, Sacramento.

The Butte County Sheriff's office said the victims had been burned to death in their cars and could not immediately be identified.

The nearby Hill Fire covered about 4,000 hectares, according to Cal Fire.

A former US Marine combat veteran opened fire in a bar packed with college students in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday night, killing 12 people and stunning a community with a reputation for safety.

"Faculty and staff who work at the Malibu and Calabasas campuses should not report to work unless they are critical support personnel", Pepperdine said.
