Norway, gas plants restart after tanker-frigate collision

Howard TerryNov 10, 2018

The frigate was on its way home to the Haakonsvern base of the Royal Norwegian Navy on the western coast after taking part in NATO's Trident Juncture 2018 military exercise, which took place from October 25 to November 7 in Norway.

One of the biggest warships in the Norwegian navy had to be evacuated after it collided with a Maltese oil tanker and started sinking. Eight injured crew members were taken off as well as the other 129 on board.

Tanker said not to suffer serious damages, as of 0530 UTC she was near collision site, moving in northern direction at dead slow speed, escorted by tug. Two of them were taken to a nearby hospital.

Coast guard deputy director Johan Marius Ly said helicopter fuel has leaked from the frigate.

An image of the ship tipped to one side was posted with the comment. Norway's Accident Investigation Board said a towboat was also involved in the accident, but didn't say how.

The tanker, which was carrying a crew of 23, was returned to port for an inspection. The oil tanker received only slight damage, while the frigate has been seriously damaged.

The main phase of the Trident Juncture 2018 training - in which more than 40,000 troops from 30 member countries and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners participated - took place from October 25 to November 7 in Norway and its surroundings.

The tanker had earlier left Equinor's Sture terminal with a cargo of North Sea crude.

Norway's largest oil and gas company, Equinor, formerly known as Statoil, said its non-emergency activities at the Sture terminal where the collision occurred were shut down as a precaution for many hours but were gradually starting up again late Thursday afternoon.

The Accident Investigation Board added that because the tanker is Maltese-registered, the Marine Safety Investigation Unit of Malta will participate in the investigation.

The KNM Helge Ingstad has been listing dangerously since Thursday's collision in the Hjeltefjord near Bergen.
