Pompeo to meet with North Korean counterpart Thursday in NY

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has shelved plans to meet with senior North Korean officials, including one of leader Kim Jong-un's top aides, the State Department said Tuesday.

Pompeo said in an interview with CBS Sunday that he expects to make "some real progress" when he meets with his counterpart, including on the potential summit, "where we can make substantial steps towards denuclearization".

Pompeo had been due to hold talks with senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol, which were hoped to pave the way for a second summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and make progress on denuclearization.

In a statement released at midnight, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo's meeting with North Korean officials "will now take place at a later date".

"The North Korea policy won't change, but there will be tighter oversight by the Democrats, which could involve more hearings and more investigations. We're in no rush".

Woo also pointed out that the Trump administration will face growing pressure to take issue with North Korea's human rights record, which could further complicate Washington's denuclearization talks with Pyongyang.

Trump and Kim Jong Un's first meeting took place in Singapore earlier this year, but the talks that between the two sides since appear to have reached a stalemate.

North Korea's foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, will visit Vietnam this month to learn about its model of economic reform, a diplomatic source and media reported on Wednesday.

The first summit yielded a joint statement committing the North to work toward "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula in exchange for security guarantees from the U.S. "We are confident going forward", Palladino told reporters during a regular briefing. -North Korea negotiations have completely broken down or "lost their momentum" because of the postponement.

But the deal has resulted in few tangible results, other than the USA suspension of some military exercises with South Korea, and North Korea's stated dismantlement of certain nuclear and missile testing sites, which the US says falls short of its expectations.

On Friday, an official with North Korea's Foreign Ministry threatened that if USA does not ease sanctions, that Pyongyang could restart "building up nuclear forces".

The ministry and south Korean foreign Affairs has deemed the report "unfortunate" but felt that the "interpretations overly pessimistic" does not justify.
