Microsoft has caught up to Apple in market value

Eileen GuzmanDec 02, 2018

Apple's market capitalisation overtook Microsoft's in 2010 as the maker of Windows software struggled with slow demand for personal computers, due in part to the explosion of smartphones driven by the iPhone.

Just four months after Apple Inc breached the $1 trillion mark, the iPhone maker has lost its lead as Wall Street's most valuable company and is on the verge of being replaced by Microsoft Corp. While Microsoft dominated Apple during the 80s and 90s, Steve Jobs finally one-upped Bill Gates with the release of the iPod and then the iPhone in the mid-2000s. You may also recall that earlier this year we told you that Apple, the biggest tech stock of them all, topped a $1tn valuation, on its own for the first time.

Shares of Apple rose 1.4 percent Monday, while Microsoft jumped 3.3 percent. Talking about the market value, both companies since the last couple of days were playing catch-up on which various media outlet reported news like Microsoft is in the driving seat, but that did not last long as soon after Microsoft slipped into its original position.

But Apple has gotten mauled amid fears of slowing demand for its iPhones. Microsoft has been pumping out quite a few well-received products as of late, including its Surface Headphones, and its Surface laptop-tablet hybrid device line-up. Shares have tumbled into a bear market, down almost 24% from where they closed September. Microsoft, on the other hand, proved to be better than other tech names after its first-quarter results showed it continuing to follow through on the vision of CEO Satya Nadella, who was appointed back in 2014.

While Apple analysts see it transitioning to a business model based more on services than unit sales, there could be more pain ahead for the stock, which could dethrone it from the number-one spot in a more decisive fashion. Microsoft shares are down 8% from their September close.
