Trump pays respect to George H.W. Bush at Capitol Rotunda

They exited the rotunda with little fanfare.

Family members, former Bush cabinet members, and senators and representatives gathered to mourn Bush. Firing back, the New York Times ridiculed Bush when, in the paper's words, he "emerged from 11 years in Washington's choicest executive mansions to confront the modern supermarket" and seemed befuddled by the checkout scanner.

But yesterday, Trump wrote members of Congress to hail Bush as a man who "led a life that exemplified what is truly great about America".

"There was a kindness", Vice President Mike Pence iterated, and he, too, listed the senior Bush's qualities: "devotion ... modesty ..."

After services in Washington, there will be another funeral in Houston on Thursday, followed by burial at the Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.

He became a multi-millionaire in the oil industry, and was a decorated World War II fighter pilot and a former head of the Central Intelligence Agency before entering the White House in 1988.

Military pallbearers carried the flag-draped casket into the rotunda as a fiery sunset bathed Washington in a glow.

"We'll be spending three days of mourning and three days of celebrating a really great man's life", Trump said about Bush's funeral while in Argentina this weekend attending the G20 summit.

George HW Bush was remembered just feet away from what he called "Democracy's front porch", the west-facing steps of the Capitol where he was sworn in as president.

His remains arrived Monday afternoon at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington aboard an aircraft that often serves as Air Force One.

Bush will lie in state in the Rotunda of the US Capitol from Monday evening Wednesday morning, under the watchful gaze of an around-the-clock honors guard.

He will lie in state in the Capitol for public visitation through Wednesday.

"It really is about the character, and how they (Bush and others in his cabinet) ran our government.

The Iraq war, the falling of the Berlin Wall, he wasn't (saying) that's all about me", Theresa Murphy, 64, a retired NY high school history teacher, said on Monday.

"He and the first lady will attend the funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C". Former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney told Politico he will deliver one of several eulogies at the service, at Bush's request.

George H.W. Bush is set to embark on his final tour of Washington, the US capital that is remembering the 41st president's lifetime of public service that began in the navy during the Second World War, ended with one term as the country's leader, and was characterized by what admirers say was his innate decency, generosity and kindness.
