Mattis said that Russia's aggression against Ukraine at sea, when the Russians opened fire on Ukrainian ships and captured their crew, highlights the reason why the global community is more and more suspicious of Moscow.

In regards to the importance of the USA military presence in Afgahnistan, Secretary Mattis has said "If we leave, with 20-odd of the most unsafe terrorist groups in the world centered in that region, we know what will happen".

Defense Secretary James Mattis said Saturday that Russian Federation attempted to interfere in the United States midterm elections last month.

Mattis, 68, a former U.S. Marine Corps general, said the U.S. and it's allies would show respect for other nation's sovereignty while exercising "constructive vigilance". -Russian relationship has deteriorated over the last two years.

Defense Secretary James Mattis said that Russian President Vladimir Putin "tried to muck around" in November's midterm elections, amid increasingly tense relations between the USA and Russia. However, Mattis said that he didn't think the threat from Russian Federation to American elections had increased.

On Saturday, Putin said he hopes a meeting with Trump will take place "when the USA is ready".

"Mr. Putin is clearly a slow learner".

"He is not recognizing that what he is doing is actually creating the animosity against his people", Mattis said.

President Donald Trump said November 27 that he was weighing a decision to cancel a scheduled meeting with President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summit in Argentina, given the escalation of hostilities.

CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta said "this is probably the revelation of the day". Trump tweeted while on his way to Buenos Aires.

Now more than ever, it's time to send "a clear message" to Putin, Panetta said Saturday.
