5G coming to Samsung phones with new Qualcomm chips in 2019

Nichole VegaDec 06, 2018

Intel will not have 5G-capable chips ready in time for the commercial production of smartphones in 2019, per the report.

We also have yet to see how well 5G will work on mobile devices, as 5G primarily transmits on the "millimeter wave" spectrum that has trouble penetrating walls and other obstacles. Verizon and AT&T have already announced plans to build 5G-ready phones with Samsung next year, and so have LG and Sprint.

During Amon's keynote this week, a list of the companies partnering with Qualcomm on the 5G rollout initiative was presented. The 855 is the first commercially-available mobile processor that supports multi-gigabit 5G connectivity, hopefully easing our transition into 5G networks without the need for a complicated or inefficient secondary modem.

EE is planning to launch 5G in 2019 in 16 different United Kingdom cities, so coverage will be limited to certain areas at first.

While Qualcomm has explained in detail how the Snapdragon 855 stands out and is of relevance to OEMs, we are simplifying the complexity of the latest flagship chipset for end users to understand what's in store.

You can learn about the 5G standard by checking out the links below. All in all, Qualcomm says its new AI Engine (taking the CPU and GPU into account too) delivers seven trillion operations per second and three times the performance of the Snapdragon 845. Now that we are talking about the next-generation networking technology in the present tense, will consumers be interested enough to adopt new devices exclusively for 5G?

However, Fotis Karonis, executive advisor for 5G at BT Group, did say that as the 5G rollout begins in the United Kingdom, consumers will be in the position to pay a "little bit more" in recognition of the differences between current networks and what 5G offers.

We also know that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is based on the 7nm manufacturing process.

We'll learn more about this and the 855 in general tomorrow. Qualcomm also said the Snapdragon 855 would feature the world's first Computer Vision (CV) ISP to also enable help phones recognise objects and faces, and power new video capture features. It is expected that Apple is going to launch its first 5G-enabled iPhone in 2020, and that Intel will be providing the 5G modem under the hood to facilitate those network connections.

Earlier this week, Samsung and Verizon had both announced plans to bring mobile devices with 5G connectivity powered by Qualcomm's new processor; it is believed the Galaxy S10 will the first such phone to launch in the first half of 2019.
