US Marine planes crash: Search and rescue off the coast of Japan

Howard TerryDec 06, 2018

The US Marine Corps says its aircraft were involved in a "mishap" off the coast of Japan, and a search-and-rescue operation is underway.

Marine Corps officials confirmed the incident but offered little information in a statement.

A US official told Fox News that seven Marines were on board the two aircraft. It was not clear how many crew members were on each of the planes. The reports suggest the F/A-18 is a two-seat variant and five other crewmembers were on board the C-130.

The aircraft - a KC-130 and an F/A-18 Hornet - had launched from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in southern Japan.

"Two Marine Corps aviators were administratively disciplined following the completion of an investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding an October 23 irregular flight pattern that resulted in an obscene image", said Maj.

It was unclear if United States military officials were also assisting with the search.

Second Lieutenant Alyssa Morales, a spokeswoman for the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing based in Okinawa, told military news site Task and goal that one of the Marines had been rescued alive, but this could not be immediately confirmed.
