Buzzcocks lead singer Pete Shelley dies at 63

Buzzcocks singer Pete Shelley has died.

Shelley, whose group helped define the Manchester punk sound and influence the American grunge movement, had apparently died of a heart attack at his home in Estonia, according to the BBC.

Born Peter Campbell McNeish in Leigh, near Wigan, Shelley formed Buzzcocks with Howard Devoto while studying in Bolton.

The Buzzcocks were a vastly influential pillar of Manchester's influential punk scene in the '70s, along with contemporaries like Magazine and the Sex Pistols. The following year, Buzzcocks began work on a fourth studio album, only to break up after recording demos for the effort.

He wrote his best-known song, "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" in 1978, and it hit No. 12 on the British music charts.

Buzzcocks reformed in 1989 and released new music, touring with bands such as Nirvana, the Adored, the Strays, Lola Ray, and Images.

BBC News cited music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine as saying the band was "inspired by the Sex Pistols' energy, yet didn't copy the Pistols' angry political stance". He also went to a successful solo career with his 1981 single "Homosapiens" reaching the top 10 in Australia and Canada. The band's most recent album was 2014's The Way.

Pete Shelley's last appearance with the band in Glasgow was at the annual Scotland Calling festival of old school punk in April at the O2 ABC - two months before the Sauchiehall Street venue was devastated by fire.
