Ericsson rumoured to be behind O2 and Softbank outages

Thousands of O2 customers in the United Kingdom have reported problems using data and 4G services.

uSwitch mobile phone expert Ernest Doku has advised users how to cope without data, saying: "O2 users affected by this mobile data outage will understandably be concerned and frustrated".

The network confirmed on Twitter that its users are "unable to access data services" and 4G coverage due to a massive data failure.

A spokesperson for the company said: "Our technical teams are investigating reports of issues when using data".

In a further tweet, O2 said the problem was related to a software issue in the system of a third party supplier.

Their technical teams are working on the issue as a "high priority" and updates will be given throughout the day.

It was thought that over a staggering 32 million O2, Giffgaff and Lycamobile customers were left without service.

"We work hard to ensure that our customers can limit the impact and restore their services as soon as possible".

Engineers are working to fix the problem.

Earlier, O2 said it suspended planned work or updates to its systems and network.

The outage also has serious implications for places that rely upon the O2 network for real-time informational services, as reported by the Independent.

The company has 25 million customers across the United Kingdom.

Ericsson has identified an issue in certain nodes in the core network resulting in network disturbances for a limited number of customers in multiple countries using two specific software versions of the SGSN-MME (Serving GPRS Support Node - Mobility Management Entity). Work is now ongoing to fix the fault and customers are being encouraged to use wi-fi where possible.
