Ex-Fox News anchor to be new USA ambassador to the UN

The Trump administration will reportedly nominate State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert to replace Nikki Haley as ambassador to the United Nations next month.

Nauert would replace current ambassador Nikki Haley, who plans to leave her post at the end of the year, according to Bloomberg News. Nauert was then appointed acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs and was for a time the highest-ranking woman and fourth highest-ranking official in the building. Before this, she worked as an ABC News correspondent and as an anchor on the Fox News program, Fox and Friends.

"I expect to continue to speak out from time to time on important public policy matters, but I will surely not be a candidate for any office in 2020", she wrote.

Having the direct support of the president and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could buttress her image, however, among global diplomats at the United Nations, who have bristled at Trump's "America First" foreign policy.

Nauert and the State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A Republican congressional aide said the president was expected to announce his decision to tap Heather Nauert for the U.N. Ambassador position by tweet on Friday morning.

She will face a variety of challenges if confirmed for the job, including championing USA efforts to contain Iran's influence in the Middle East and ensuring the global body maintains tough sanctions on North Korea as Washington tries to negotiate an end to Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. She does not have prior political or policy-making experience.

The post is considered one of the highest profile positions in US diplomacy.

He added: "She's excellent, she's been with us a long time, she's been a supporter for a long time, really - excellent".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders described Nauert in March as "a team player" and "a strong asset for the administration".
