The officer died from gunshot wounds, district magistrate Anuj Jha told Reuters. They may have been angry over the police's and the administration's failures in preventing the alleged slaughter of the cattle, but the violent means they adopted can not be condoned.

On Tuesday night, too, Adityanath held an emergency meeting and ordered strict action against those involved in the alleged cow slaughter.

A police officer in northern India was killed trying to calm a mob angered by reports that cows, regarded by Hindus as holy, had been slaughtered in the area.

"We are not only seeing it as a law and order issue".

Singh said, "It has already been said that family of the deceased is being provided with a financial aid of 50 lakh rupees".

"These were suspected cow carcasses and the villagers were angry about it", said Kumar. "There were two incidents that happened on that day", he says referring to the Monday incident. While it was not clear if any hard-line groups were behind the attack, Raj is alleged to be a member of right-wing Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, a Hindu group that opposes cow slaughter and conversion of Hindus to Islam. As the officers scurried for cover, the men began to hurl stones and even bricks at them, Mr Asrey said in an interview on Monday. He is our district convenor, we are with him and he is innocent. The role of a local Bajrang Dal leader in inciting the crowd into violence and arson is being probed. As of now only four persons have been arrested and police is now planning to send court notices of attachment of property of the absconding accused in the case. When we received this information, I reached the spot along with my friends.

After news of the alleged cow slaughter spread, protetsors blocked the Bulandshahr-Garhmukteshwar state highway outside a police post in Chingrawathi, on the outskirts of Mahaw. The mob left more than five policemen wounded, burned down a police station and set several vehicles on fire.

An 18-year-old protester was killed and another policeman was injured in the violence. One of the accused Yogesh Raj released his video on Wednesday, while Shikhar Agarwal released his video on Thursday. Syana is a hamlet near Bulandshahr.
