BT Strips Huawei from 3G and 4G Core Networks

BT will still use some of the vendor's gear out on the edge and for "benign parts of the network" that aren't a security risk, but is also excluding Huawei from the bidding for its 5G buildout plans.

BT's share price has slipped marginally into the red in today's session, having given up 0.23 percent to 260.05p as of 08:43 GMT.

The Chinese company added that it had a robust cyber security assurance system and had never had a cyber security-related incident.

Telecom giant Huawei Technologies suffered a new setback in Britain as its equipment got frozen out for use in leading carrier BT Group PLC's core networks, even as the controversial company won a smaller victory with reaffirmation for its products from Portugal.

Chinese officials said Canada and the U.S. had yet to clarify their reason for the arrest but sources have suggest United States authorities had been monitoring Huawei, the world's largest telecoms equipment maker, since at least 2016 for allegedly shipping US-origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of USA export and sanctions laws.

The move appears to reflect government concern about the close links between Huawei and the Chinese state, and the worry that Huawei's equipment could be used as a "backdoor" for Chinese spying.

BT has worked with Huawei for more than 10 years but avoided using it for the most central parts of its network.

Huawei said it will continue to collaborate with BT despite being left out of the 5G vendor process. Despite pressure from US officials and opposition politicians, the federal government has maintained its position of not limiting Huawei.

"We need to decide the extent to which we are going to be comfortable with Chinese ownership of these technologies and these platforms in an environment where some of our allies have taken quite a definite position", he is reported to have said by the Guardian newspaper.

Huawei told The Reg it had "been working with BT for nearly 15 years".

New Zealand and Australia have stopped telecom operators using Huawei's equipment in new 5G networks because they are concerned about possible Chinese government involvement in their communications infrastructure.

The approach will also be applied in BT's next-generation 5G mobile network, for which it is procuring equipment.

In July, a report released by the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) Oversight Board revealed that the company would indeed pose security risks.
