Former Cleveland Indians infielder dies in car accident

A pair of major league infielders were killed in a auto crash early Friday morning in Venezuela.

The professional baseball players who were killed in a auto crash in Venezuela on Thursday actually rolled their vehicle in a stickup gone wrong, according to officials and news reports.

They played for the same team in the Venezuelan winter league, and both played in Thursday night's game. Carlos Rivero, who played briefly for the Diamondbacks in 2014 was driving the vehicle, but he survived the accident.

Valbuena played 11 seasons in the majors with multiple teams that included the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and the Angels.

In this 2017 photo, Los Angeles Angels third baseman Luis Valbuena throws out Tampa Bay Rays' Kevin Kiermaier on a sacrifice bunt during the fifth inning of a baseball game in St. Petersburg, Fla.

"I will miss Luis's banter, smile, genuine love for his teammates, and, of course, the bat flips", Astros manager AJ Hinch said in a statement.

Castillo, 37, debuted in the majors in 2004 and played four seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros. He recorded a.254 batting average, 39 homes runs and 218 career RBIs.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families of Castillo and Valbuena during this hard time.

The pair had been travelling together on their way home after playing a game in their home country of Venezuela, MLB said in a statement.
