Earlier in the day, the Walter Camp Award for best player went to Tagovailoa, while Murray won the Associated Press' Player of the Year.

Tua Tagovailoa will have to wait until Saturday to find out if he's the victor of college football's top prize.

Murray was drafted by the A's in the first round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and said he would give up football after playing this season with the Sooners.

Murray joins Baker Mayfield (2017), Josh Heupel (2000), Jason White (2003) and Sam Bradford (2008) as previous winners from Oklahoma. He also ranks second in completion percentage (.709; first among Power Five players).

As for raw numbers, Murray has thrown for 4,053 yards, 40 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while completing 71 percent of his passes. Tagovailoa also broke Alabama's single-game touchdown records with six (five passing, one rushing) during Alabama's 52-21 victory over Auburn.

Murray is having a historic season. He had his school- and Big 12-record streak of eight games with at least three TD passes snapped in a win against Oklahoma State on November 10.

The victor of the award will be announced Saturday in New York City. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was named the AP player of the year Wednesday, and was chosen as the Davey O'Brien Award victor as the nation's top quarterback today.

If Murray wins, it would be OU's seventh Heisman Trophy.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray split top honors on a college football awards night that only has momentum building towards Saturday night's Heisman Trophy announcement. The game will be televised by ESPN.
