Pakistan Condemns Chabahar Terrorist Attack

Howard TerryDec 08, 2018

"Three people were killed and some others were injured", Rahmdel Bameri, acting governor of the coastal city of Chabahar told state television, which reported the figure of 48 hurt.

Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour told semi-official Tasmin News Agency such a "blind terrorist attack" would achieve no results.

Several recent attacks in the province have been claimed by the jihadist Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice), which is blacklisted as a terrorist group by Iran.

It has a deep-water port on the Gulf of Oman which, with Indian assistance, Iran has been developing as a major energy and freight hub between Central Asia and India, bypassing Pakistan.

Earlier reports said at least three people had been killed and more than two dozen injured by the explosion.

According to security officials, the explosion was caused by a auto bomb going off in front of the Police Headquarters in Chabahar, Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The attack was claimed by a Sunni separatist group called Jundullah (Soldiers of God).

"Iran will bring terrorists and their masters to justice", he wrote on Twitter. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

"India strongly condemns today's despicable terrorist attack in Chabahar, Iran".

It is located in Iran's southeastern region of Sistan-Baluchistan, home to a Sunni Muslim minority in largely Shi'ite Iran.

Tehran accuses its Sunni-led regional rival Saudi Arabia and the United States of funding most of these groups, a charge that Riyadh and Washington deny. "There can be no justification for any act of terror", an MEA statement said.

Citing Afghanistan's economy, the U.S. last approved a sanctions exemption for Chabahar when it re-imposed a second round of bans against Iran months after its withdrawal from a 2015 multilateral deal with Iran, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Washington has granted exceptions to some US sanctions on Iran for the project.
