Police confirm United Kingdom backpacker Grace Millane was murdered in New Zealand

NEW Zealand Police have announced they believe missing British backpacker Grace Millane has been murdered reports the BBC.

They had previously been speaking with him over the disappearance.

The Millane family have requested privacy at this time and will not be making any further statements at this stage.

"We sort of noticed Gracie hadn't really texted back or hadn't read anything, which was obviously really unusual because it was her birthday".

"He was brought back here to the Auckland Central police station and is now speaking to us in relation to the murder of Grace Millane". He would not confirm what type of vehicle it was.

"We are determined to find her and return her to her family", Mr Beard said.

The last confirmed sighting of Millane was at the CityLife Hotel, in Queen St, at 9.41pm on Saturday.

A man is to be charged with the murder of British backpacker Grace Millane, police said.

She had been in contact with her family almost every day until December 1, the day before her birthday.

Beard said "that property is going to be somewhere, the clothing is going to be somewhere, we haven't found it".

"Several of her belongings, including her passport, are missing and police believe it is likely that Grace has these items with her". The father had traveled from Britain to New Zealand earlier in the week.

According to the newspaper, the police arrived at this conclusion after studying "evidence uncovered during the investigation, including CCTV footage and scene examinations".

"Grace's family has been advised of this development and they are devastated".

'We're all extremely upset and it's very hard at this time to describe the range of emotions we are going through'. He was brought back here to Auckland Central Police Station and is now speaking to us in relation to the murder of Grace Millane.

They urged members of the public to come forward with any information.

Police say Grace Millane was last spotted entering CityLife hotel in Auckland's CBD with a man on Saturday.

On Saturday police released images of a pink watch and a necklace belonging to her and asked for the public's help in finding them.

She graduated from the University of Lincoln in September and had embarked on a year-long worldwide trip.

"We thought maybe it's just the time zone, sort of catching up, but we looked into it and realised her messages hadn't been read or delivered".

Detective Beard said Millane's case has been tough, at the press conference.

"Everybody who is a parent out there will understand what their family is going through".

"Our hearts go out to them".

Her father, David Millane, said they last had contact on the day she vanished.
