'We were astonished': Man coughs up huge mystery blood clot

Doctors are at a loss or words after a 36-year-old man coughed up a blood clot in the exact shape of his right lung, according to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Doctors are bewildered as to how an extraordinarily shaped blood clot came out of a patient.

Earlier this week the New England Journal of Medicine tweeted a photo of what looked like a attractive piece of bright red coral to their 545,000 followers.

During the week of the patient's hospitalization, the man had periodic episodes of coughing, which progressed to one extreme coughing fit when he suddenly expelled the unusual clot.

Per the New England Journal of Medicine, the man was an ICU patient at the University of San Francisco Medical Center being treated for end-stage heart failure.

Per the Atlantic, Wieselthaler said that the use of the pump requires anticoagulants to "make the blood thinner and prevent clots from forming", though that comes with the risk of uncontrolled internal bleeding.

After days of coughing up tiny blood clots, the man eventually - much to his relief - spat up a cast of his right lung's bronchial tree.

"We were astonished", Dr Wieselthaler said. These medications are what caused the patient's blood to eventually break out of the network and into the lower right lung-due to the clotting agents not being able to fix cracks in the system.

The 36-year-old patient was in intensive care.

Wieselthaler called the occurrence "very, very, very rare".

After coughing up the bronchial tree, doctors immediately intubated him and performed a bronchoscopy, but he later died from heart failure complications ('volume overload and poor cardiac output'), despite the placement of the ventricular assist device.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team, the man died a week after coughing up the bronchial tube cast.
