Amid heightened tensions, police seized 28 petrol bombs and three homemade explosive devices Friday at an area blockaded by protesters in Montauban in southern France, a spokesman for the Tarn-et-Garonne prefecture told CNN. A ring of steel surrounded the president's Elysée Palace, while many shops were closed during what's usually a busy holiday shopping season. He added that far-right and far-left agitators were planning to take over the protests, staged by people known as the "yellow jackets".

Police responded with tear gas and batons.

Protesters threw back the tear gas at the police, only to escalate the clashes.

In addition to the closure of the Eiffel Tower, many shops and museums across Paris, including the Louvre, the Orsay Museum and the Grand Palais, will keep their doors shut on Saturday for safety reasons. "People have well understood that if they want to demonstrate peacefully, they have to submit to these checks", she said.

Saturday's yellow vest crowd was overwhelmingly male, a mix of those bringing their financial grievances to Paris-the center of France's government, economy and culture-along with groups of apparently experienced vandals, who tore steadily through some of the city's wealthiest neighborhoods, smashing and burning.

While the protests began over fuel taxes, they have snowballed into a wider movement against Macron, largely among people in small-town and rural France.

Demonstrators wearing yellow vests march down the Champs Elysees in Paris, France, on Saturday, December 8, 2018.

Prized Paris monuments and normally bustling shopping meccas locked down and tens of thousands of police took position around France to face protesters angry at President Emmanuel Macron and France's high taxes.

A police spokeswoman told reporters there were about 1,500 protesters on the Champs Elysees boulevard.

Most of the protesters remain peaceful, and there are no signs so far of the rioting and looting that marked a similar protest last Saturday and prompted fears of greater violence this week.

Left-wing politicians have expressed outrage at the videos, which have gone viral on social media, showing the teenagers kneeling as riot police barked orders at them.

Authorities deployed barricade-busting armored vehicles and 8,000 police in the capital alone; nationwide, some 89,000 security forces fanned out to deter or confront troublemakers expected at multiple protests.

The seven "yellow vest" invited to the meeting said they were satisfied from the discussion. The leaderless group is united primarily in its sense that Macron and his government are out of touch. "But I still want to be here to say 'Stop, that's enough'".

Almost 1,400 people were detained across France, according to Interior Minister Christophe Castaner. "We have prepared a robust response, ' Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said on Saturday".

Four people have died in accidents since the unrest began November 17 and Christmas markets, national soccer matches and countless cultural events have been canceled due to the protests. Christmas markets, national football matches and countless other events have been cancelled or disrupted by the protests.

Protesters also blocked roads, roundabouts and tollbooths elsewhere in France and offshoot movements have emerged in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The US president also claimed protesters were chanting his name on the streets of the French capital, as his rift with Mr Macron continued to deepen.
